Brno, 18 March 2026 – The Brno
Exhibition Centre (Veletrhy Brno, a.s., BVV) has launched the Open 5G Hub Brno, a new testing zone designed to
validate smart and innovative solutions in real-world conditions. The project
is built on private 5G connectivity and other advanced communication
technologies. It forms part of the BVV Living Lab and will offer facilities for
both testing and demonstration across areas such as smart cities, Industry 4.0,
and future mobility.
The zone will be accessible to a wide range of
partners from both the public and private sectors, including universities,
research institutions, government authorities, municipalities, city
organisations, companies, as well as emergency services and the Czech Army.
A private 5G network is a core component of the
testing zone. The infrastructure also includes an IoT mesh network made up of
smart lighting and metering systems installed across the site. These elements
are interconnected via communication gateways into a wireless network operating
in an unlicensed frequency band.
The solution primarily targets use cases in
energy and community energy systems, measurement and regulation, and utility
network management. The infrastructure is complemented by advanced video
sensing technologies designed for collecting and analysing traffic flow data.
The system can detect traffic intensity and patterns, including the movement of
vehicles and pedestrians. All data is anonymised, aggregated, and compressed in
compliance with cybersecurity requirements and GDPR regulations. Over time, this
will create a robust data base for testing scenarios in traffic management,
parking, site logistics, and urban logistics.
The Open 5G Hub Brno will continue to be
developed in synergy with key projects and events, including trade fairs such
as URBIS, AMPER, IDET, and the International Engineering Fair. In the future,
the 5G testing zone will be followed by the FutureZone Polygon, a platform for
testing autonomous mobility, smart logistics, and unmanned systems (UAV, UGV).
Through this initiative, Brno Trade Fairs
strengthens its role as an active player in the national and regional
innovation ecosystem and confirms the importance of trade fairs as places where
new technologies are not only presented but also tested and implemented in
practice.
