The first CZ LOKO locomotive has begun operating in Norway, marking the 20th country where the Czech manufacturer’s locomotives are now in service

Entering the Norwegian market is an important milestone for CZ LOKO, adding to its footprint in countries such as Germany, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Turkey, the Baltic states, and of course, the Czech Republic.

CZ LOKO recently handed over its first EffiShunter 1000 locomotive for Norwegian operations, with a second unit currently being commissioned. The customer in Scandinavia is the rolling stock leasing companies AC Finance and Trainpoint Norway, whose fleets are largely used by Swedish operator Railcare.

The first locomotive, unit 744.193, has already entered service at the Alnabru container terminal in Oslo under CargoNet. The second, 744.194, will follow once its national safety systems are activated in Malmö. Until now, the EffiShunter 1000 has only appeared in Norway for testing, making these units the first to enter full commercial service.

EffiShunter 1000 locomotives are powered by an 895 kW Caterpillar C32 engine meeting EU Stage V emissions standards. Their TSI certification ensures compliance with EU-wide norms, meaning only additional national tests are required for local approval. The locomotives operate reliably between –40 °C and +40 °C, proven in both the Arctic regions of Scandinavia and sunny Italy. Standard equipment includes ETCS, with Sweden-specific radio remote control and, newly, an alcohol immobiliser first showcased at Rail Business Days.

Originally a regional repair workshop, CZ LOKO has grown into a manufacturer delivering both modernised and newly built locomotives that meet strict European standards. The company’s major successes include long-term sales in the Baltics, the Balkans, Italy—its largest market—and Finland, where Fenniarail operates six modernised locomotives.
