Toyota will begin production of electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the Czech Republic in 2028. Last year, the Kolín plant boosted output by approximately 17 percent, reaching a total of 225,058 vehicles.
Japanese
carmaker Toyota Motor is set to commence electric vehicle (EV) production in
the Czech Republic in 2028, with an expected annual output of around 100,000
vehicles. The news was reported by the Japanese daily Nikkei, as cited
by iDnes. Toyota currently manufactures the Aygo X and Yaris models at
its Kolín plant.
According
to Nikkei, Toyota plans to produce an electric sport utility vehicle
(SUV) at the site. This would mark the company’s first electric vehicle to be
manufactured in Europe.
Discussions
regarding the potential for EV production in Kolín began in 2023. At the time,
Martin Peleška, Toyota’s CEO for the Czech Republic, stated in an interview
with e15.cz that the factory could be suited to manufacturing small,
affordable electric vehicles.
The Kolín
plant was originally established as a joint venture between Toyota and French
carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroën under the name Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile
(TPCA). Toyota assumed full ownership on 1 January 2021, renaming the facility
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic. It is Toyota’s eighth production
plant within the European Union.
In 2024,
the Kolín factory increased its production by approximately 17 percent,
reaching a total of 225,058 vehicles. The plant, which employs over 3,200
people, currently produces the Aygo X and Yaris models with internal combustion
engines, along with a hybrid version of the Yaris.
