Czech Army to Acquire 3,000 Drones by 2028, Says Defense Minister

The Czech Army is significantly expanding its technological capabilities

The Czech Army plans to acquire 3,000 drones by the year 2028, Minister of Defense Jaromír Zůna announced to journalists during an international military signal corps exercise in Bechyně.

"We are currently implementing five public contracts to acquire 3,000 drones for the Army of the Czech Republic," stated Zůna. He added that according to NATO's annual report for 2025, the Czech Republic ranks among the countries with the highest pace of military modernization.

"Our long-term goal is to replace human labor with capital. That means replacing soldiers on the battlefield with technology," he explained. According to the Minister, the Czech military tradition lies in utilizing the most sophisticated technologies and building technologically based armed forces rather than relying on massive troop numbers.

The military budget for this year is set at 158 billion CZK. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš noted that the state has increased the army's budget by 24.9 billion CZK year-on-year. The currently approved budget of the Ministry of Defense accounts for approximately 1.73 percent of the GDP, with the potential to reach the 2 percent NATO commitment when factoring in defense-related projects across other ministries.
